I just received an email from a site user who wanted to know how many online Phd degrees there are in the USA. Great question!
Get Educated profiles hundreds accredited online PhD & doctorate degrees.Northcentral University appears to offer the most online doctorates while there are several interesting or unusual doctorate degrees online, like the one in Sports Management Education from the United States Sports Academy a regionally accredited college that specializes in — you guessed it! — sports degrees.
Help us gather more data. Suggest a distance learning doctoral program that is not in our data base. We’re especially looking for affordable state or public universities that offer online degree programs nationwide.

Hi USP, Is the online doctorate you are looking at this one then: Dakota State University Online Doctorate of Science in Information Sciences If so, below is the basic data on cost for that Phd degree (2012): Get Educated.com Degree Profile Data = Credits: 61 minimum – 88 maximum (Semester Credits) Tuition: State Residents: $ 368.00 per semester credit Out of State: $ 368.00 per semester credit Total Cost of Degree: $22,448.00 – $32,384.00 What is the cost data that you are looking at that is different? The above is based on 2102 rates — you may be seeing 2013… Read more »
I recently discovered a what seemed to have been an excellent Doctorial program. Specifically the program was located at Dakota State University, the Doctorate of science Information Systems. In ranking the institution by cost I found it to be the best value by far. Well when following up with DSU, the tuition posted wad grossly inaccurate by more than $10,000. Consequently, I wondering if anyone has experienced similar findings and want would cause such a discrepancy? The school had largely been unable to account for the substantial difference.
Looks like Oregon State University offers their PhD in Counseling in a “hybrid” learning format. While primarily online, students meet face-to-face twice each quarter for a Friday-thru-Saturday session, for a total of 16 visits.
Looks like an interesting program, but prospective students should already have a number of hours of clinical experience under their belt before they get started!

Hello,
Thanks for the tip. This school is not yet in the GetEducated.com directory of online PHD programs but it will be in the future. Readers can find out more on the referred website which has a brochure to download for the details.
Thanks for the great tip! Keep em coming. Our editors are constantly searching for new online schools to add to the big picture.

St. Thomas University (Florida) offers Doctorate of Education (EdD) in Leadership and Management
All,
One more program for those interested in Leadership Studies:
Online Doctor of Management in Executive Leadership from Walsh College Online :http://www.walshcollege.edu/dmel
Terrific-looking program, but the tuition is $930/credit hour, so the price is a bit steep.
Everyone,
One more school that might be worth look into is the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Unlike many universities, it’s a “graduate-only” school, which offers only masters or doctorate degrees.
SEE the Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s online masters in psychology.
It’s a private non-profit school that also offers 3 doctorates online:
1) PhD in Organizational Leadership
2) PhD in International Psychology with 2 concentrations:
a) Organizations and Systems
b) Trauma
3) PsyD in Business Psychology
Thanks, Vicky! Yes, the “treasure hunt” continues! Regarding accreditation…while it doesn’t happen often, accrediting agencies reserve the right to revoke an institution’s status if it doesn’t think that they are maintaining standards. This actually happened in June to Dana College, a school with a long history (founded in 1884) near where I live. Due to financial issues, the plans were to have them be bought by a corporation and run as a for-profit institution. The Higher Learning Commission did not approve the deal, saying that the new for-profit entity would not be regionally accredited. As a result, the college unfortunately… Read more »
Hi David, Welcome back. We missed you! I see you are still out there digging up possible new online doctorate degrees. See Dave’s great blog on the search for the best online PHD. It’s like a treasure hunt, eh? Thanks for both the new program update and the alert on accreditation at Mountain State. Many people don’t know that a college can be put on an alert status or loose their accreditation if standards slip and are not addressed. While this does not hurt alumni it can mean that current students could end up with a degree that lacks the… Read more »
Hey everyone, It looks like Mountain State University is offering an online Doctor of Executive Leadership (DEL): http://www.mountainstate.edu/programs/leadership/what-is-executive-leadership.aspx It’s a 58 credit hour program with a 5-day on-campus residency each year, with a cost of $725/hour. The school is a regionally accredited, not-for-profit institution that has been around since 1933, but it appears their accreditation is currently under scrutiny. The president of MSU has disclosed that they’ve been given a “show-cause” order by the Higher Learning Commission to prove that they’ve addressed a number of concerns (http://president.mountainstate.edu/, http://www.mountainstate.edu/aboutmsu/facts/accreditation/Show%20Cause%20Order.pdf). I find leadership a very interesting field, but I may follow MSU’s… Read more »
Thanks for the note Les!
We do have one happy verified online student at the Liberty Online EdD for leadership who took the time to review the doctoral program there. They gave the program an “A.”
I’ve heard great things about Liberty University’s online Doctor of Education. I’ve seen the LMS and it’s very well organized and they offer a big discount for military and their spouses.
Hi David,
Yes, Melissa, who does the online college directory verification, says that you are correct about the cost given for Valdosta State University. It is the same also whether one is a Georgia resident or whether one takes the courses online. This is a great example where people from any state can use online learning to get great bargain tuition rates from state schools in areas where higher education is cheaper bcs. of low cost of living and great tax subsidies.
Thanks for this tip!
Vicky Phillips
Also, anyone interested in an Online Doctor of Public Administration now has the option to pursue it online from Valdosta State University (Georgia)
If I’m reading this correctly, distance students have a tuition rate of $255/credit hour. I hope that I’m reading this correctly, because that’s a fantastic value.
Everyone,
There’s a brand-new doctorate that just started up this spring at Creighton University. They have an online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Leadership.
Sounded pretty impressive after talking to admissions…they have it structured so that everyone takes one class at a time, with 8-week quarters, and there are two on-campus visits for residency that last four days each.
Even though it’s an Ed.D., they stress that it’s meant to be interdisciplinary, and people outside of the education field are allowed in as well.
Hi David ,
Thak you for giving me reply .
Hi Bessie,
Thank you for the note.

Online students need to know that value and quality can be found in one package. Get Educated is a very good example.
Thank you, David for the update on the new doctorates!
Mississippi State also ranks high in online college affordability, making the Get Educated best online business school aacsb ranking list for affordability.
Their Bagley Engineering school online is also ranked a top best buy for college affordability for their online masters in engineering.
Great find!

Another note…Mississippi State University Bagley College of Engineering Online PHD has really ramped up their online offerings of late. Initially, I think they only had a PhD in Engineering, with an industrial engineering concentration. Now, they’ve added 3 others:
PhD in Community College Leadership
PhD in Computer Engineering
PhD in Electrical Engineering
Here is the URL to all online doctorate degrees in engineering in GE’s directory.
I don’t know enough about the school yet, but the fact that they offer distance engineering degrees that are ABET accredited, and their business degrees are AACSB accredited seems noteworthy.

Hi Vicky and others,
We do not appear to have a best buy for doctorates. I thought that I would share with you a very good DBA buy from a DETC accredited University. California Intercontinental University in Diamond Bar CA, offers an online DBA for under $16k. It is a well run university with excellent staff and standards. The workload is tough. That is good. The President is a dynamic leader. It would be nice if we could have a best buy doctorates list in due course.
Dhandlos and Vicky. Thank you both for sharing such fascinating information. It is all quite an eye opener.
Hi DHandlos, Another great find not yet in our online phd directory. Indiana State University is in my home state of .. well you guessed it .. Indiana. Melissa, who oversees our university directory is an alumn of Indiana State University too. We have many online masters and doctorate programs from Indiana State University in our database. We do not yet list this particular distance degree though. ISU offers a number of distance degrees, many focused on state residents with limited residency like the one you have noted. They are exceptionally affordable. Back when I lived in Indiana they used a satellite… Read more »
Thanks much DHandlos for the insider’s tip and insight on the Bellevue Online degree program.
We have Bellevue University Online in the distance degree database and they are on several of our online college rankings best buy lists for affordable online degrees from regionally accredited schools.
This Online Doctorate is not in our database yet though, so it’s a good find which may help others looking for solid online phd programs from regionally accredited universities.
Send more tips as you find them!

Another online doctorate is the Ph.D. in Human Capital Management at Bellevue University (http://www.bellevue.edu/degrees/phd/human-capital-mgmt/). If someone is working in the corporate field, especially HR, this could be a good program to look into.
I can’t say HR is my field, but I have taken some business/information systems classes at Bellevue, and they were quite challenging. With online coursework they usually keep you hopping by giving credit for participation in the message boards (ex. The first person to post a new topic gets 10 points, etc.).
Also, they are a regionally accredited institution, and their business programs are IACBE-accredited as well!
I’ve been researching a number of different degree programs, and found one PhD program in the field of “Technology Management” from Indiana State University: http://technology.indstate.edu/consortphd/
It’s actually a program run by a consortium of schools, including ISU:
– Bowling Green State University
– East Carolina University
– Indiana State University
– North Carolina A&T
I’m still reading, but it would require 2 on-campus sessions of 5 days during what they term their “residency” year, although they can be scheduled to include weekends.
It sounds interesting so far, but I may have to call them for some details about the coursework.
Hi Vicky, Many thanks for your detailed reply. I will certainly share information. I was told by an enrolment adviser at Jones IU that they had a PhD program based on a research thesis only. They seem therefore to have a combination of both models. But as the cost was in the region of $45000 for the program it was off putting to say the least as the researcher does all the work anyway ! Hence my earlier question. Many thanks!
Hi NDLovu, The Get Educated online degree directory lists 113 accredited online doctorate programs BUT these are all in the USA and subject the USA model of education. I think you will find that none of the online PHD programs in the Get Educated directory are by dissertation only, meaning that no formal course work is required only a research project that leads to the PHD. The dissertation only doctorate is available from some European and Australian open university degree programs but GetEducated focuses on accredited online colleges in the USA. In the USA in distance learning the most common… Read more »
Most interesting information. Thank you! Are there any PhD programs in USA that are by dissertation (Thesis) only from accredited Universities ? It seems that Jones International has such a program for a research PhD by dissertation only but it is very expensive. Any comments would be most welcome.
