Career Guide: Online MBA Accounting

These degrees are perfect for anyone with a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field. They develop your understanding of business practices while making you a more knowledgeable expert in the field of accounting.

What to Expect from an Online MBA Accounting Degree

Accounting is, essentially, the practice of recording, documenting, and understanding past financial activity. The accounting process can take many different forms, including the summarization of past activity, the analysis of past decisions, and the reporting of earnings and transactions to government agencies; namely the IRS.

It’s a complex career that requires a mind for small details. People who go into accounting are (generally speaking) naturally organized and detail-oriented people. They usually have a talent for math and numbers, although you don’t have to be a mathematics genius to excel as an accountant.

While there are some common traits among accounting master’s graduates, there are also skills you need to work in accounting and finance careers, skills that can be developed in an online MBA accounting program.

An MBA, which stands for “Master’s of Business Administration,” is a degree that builds your overall understanding of business, management, and leadership. An MBA, at its foundation, is a generalized business degree that takes into account all aspects of business leadership. An MBA with a specialization in accounting, therefore, is great for a student who wants to build their overall understanding of business while also focusing into accounting practices as they apply to companies.

This is slightly different from a master’s degree in accounting, which will focus more heavily and in greater detail on accounting while not addressing many of the business-related topics that are part of an online MBA accounting program.

Classes in an online MBA accounting program are usually separated into two areas. The first is the core classes, which are generalized business course. Considering that an MBA is a form of master’s degree, these classes will take a detailed look at essential (and challenging) business topics, including corporate law, strategic management, HR leadership, hiring practices, and advanced economics.

The other area will be the accounting concentration. Course may include financial accounting, taxation law, and government accounting, among many others.

Careers After an Online MBA Accounting Degree

Once you have completed an MBA in accounting, you will be prepared for numerous careers. You could, of course, work as an accountant, serving the public as a CPA or working as an accountant for a major company, non-profit, or even a government agency. However, you don’t necessarily need to have the word “accountant” or even “accounting” in your job title, as these programs prepare you for many exciting careers.

Economist

  • Salary: $108,350
  • Education: Master’s degree
  • Experience: None

An economist studies and makes predictions about money, resources, goods, and services. Their work can include researching economic issues, conducting surveys, collecting data, and analyzing information. They also need to present this information in a relatable, understandable manner, so communication skills, which are often developed in an MBA, are essential as well.

Economists work for a variety of organizations, including governments, research groups, financial and insurance companies, and consulting services. To become an economist, you need to have a master’s degree for most positions. An MBA with a focus on accounting will give you the right skills, although you may need to take courses or certifications in economics to be hired for many jobs.

Financial Manager

  • Salary: $134,180
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: Five years or more

A financial manager, which is one of the highest-paying jobs listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, oversees the financial health of an organization. They manage financial activities, create reports, direct investments, and develop both long- and short-term plans for people and individuals.

An MBA in accounting is a great path to this career, as it develops your understanding of management and financial activity. It also develops your skills in organizational thinking, mathematics, and communications, which are critical to the success of a financial manager.

Requirements to Work in Accounting Management

To work in management, you will rarely need licensing or certification. However, you may be required to hold licensing of you plan to work as an accountant. A Certified Public Accountant, for example, must go through frequent licensing requirements to legally serve individual clients.

Certifications in your specific area may be voluntary, but they can boost your career. Financial managers, for example, could complete the the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, which is offered by the CFA Institute.
