Methodology for These Rankings

These rankings of online computer and electrical engineering master’s programs are based on our fall 2023 review of degrees. In order to calculate the total cost, we use a variety of factors including minimum required credit hours, tuition rates, and general fees. At the time of collection, the information was valid and specific to the individual program. Profiles for the same degrees found in the directory on our site may, on occasion, reflect a different cost based on editorial update schedules.

The published cost is an estimated total price for the entire degree, but actual costs will vary by student. For example, if you have transfer credits, your cost may be lower. Prerequisite courses, textbook fees, licensing requirements, financial aid, and numerous other factors can impact the price of an affordable online computer and electrical engineering degree.

We strive to create the most honest, accurate ranking system possible. Therefore, we do not accept payments from schools to be included or removed from our rankings. The rankings are open to any regionally-accredited public or nonprofit college or university that offers an online computer or electrical engineering degree. We do not include degrees from non-accredited, nationally-accredited, or for-profit schools in our rankings. We also exclude from our rankings degrees that are available less than 80% online and those that are only available to students in five states or fewer.

Program Note: In order to qualify for a ranking, the master’s in computer engineering online must be regionally accredited. Additional programmatic accreditation is noted in the rank table. Degrees labeled with superscript 14 indicate that options for this program have changed since publication.

Why Enroll in One of the Cheapest Online Master’s Electrical Engineering Programs?

People enroll in these programs for many reasons. Whether they want to propel their career or increase their earning potential, here are three excellent reasons to enroll in a computer engineering master’s online program:

  • Increased salary: The minimum education required for many engineering careers is a bachelor’s degree, but with a master’s, your earning potential will increase. The median weekly income for people with bachelor’s degrees is $1,432, while the median for a master’s graduate in any field is $1,661.
  • Engineer the future: As a computer or electrical engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing and building important technologies that will shape our future society.
  • Move into leadership: A master’s degree gives you the chance to work in engineering management and leadership. This is possible with just a bachelor’s, but many companies prefer their managers to hold master’s degrees.

Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering: Program Cost

This database contains 90 degrees from 60 colleges and universities, making it one of the larger databases on our site. While there are many options, there is also a wide range of prices, from below $8,000 to nearly $80,000.

The most affordable in-state price comes from North Carolina A&T State University, which offers the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering for only $7,605. This price, however, is only available to North Carolina residents. Computer and Electrical Engineering: Program Types

When selecting a degree, you must understand the various types, as well as specific concentrations and specializations.

The degrees in this database are either “master of science” or “master of engineering” programs. A master of science in engineering is a research-focused degree that often requires the completion of a thesis, a large research paper developed throughout your studies. Master of science programs are used for professional development but can also be utilized for academic advancement, as university research faculty and PhD candidates need a master’s degree.

A master of engineering, while similar, focuses on the practical skills involved in the engineering profession. It typically emphasizes engineering skills in the context of management, administration, organization, and leadership. They usually do not have a thesis option, although large exams are often required. These degrees tell employers that you are technically proficient and prepared for the challenges of electrical or computer engineering.

Accreditation for Electrical and Computer Engineering Programs

To ensure quality, consistency, and reliability, the academic system relies on a process called accreditation. In the U.S., independent groups called accrediting bodies review schools and programs. Assuming they meet a specific standard, they become accredited.

All the online MS electrical engineering programs in this database are from accredited schools. When you enroll in one of these programs, you’ll know that your education meets the highest standard. In addition, the degree will be honored and respected by employers and industry groups.

Institutional accreditation is usually administered by regional groups that serve large sections of the country. Regional accrediting bodies include the New England Commission of Higher Education and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

There is also a degree-specific form of accreditation called programmatic. While useful, this is less common and not essential. As long as the degree comes from an accredited school, it will meet a high academic standard and deliver a world-class education.

Typical Admission Requirements for the Cheapest Online Master’s Electrical Engineering Programs

The basic requirement for an online electrical engineering master’s degree is a bachelor’s degree. But not just any bachelor’s degree; it must relate to electrical or computer engineering in some way. Engineering, mathematics, data science, physics, and electrical systems are all potential pathways to these degrees.

To gain entry, you may need a specific GPA from past studies. A 3.0 or better is a general guideline, although some programs have even higher requirements.

Most programs will require a letter of intent and multiple letters of recommendation written by previous instructors or professional supervisors within the engineering field.

Licensing, Training, or Experience Requirements

These degrees can lead to a variety of careers that have vastly different duties and work environments. But one consistent factor is the lack of licensing requirements. While voluntary certification is possible, most electrical and computer engineers will not need licensing, which makes the career more accessible.

In some regions, you may need an Engineer in Training (EIT) license, which can then lead to a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Certification, although voluntary, can enhance your career options. It all depends on your career goals, but you may select credentials that include Certified Systems Engineer Professional or Certified Technical Professional.

Some engineers may use their master’s degrees to become engineering managers, a lucrative and rewarding occupation. For this role, however, you must have at least five years of experience.

Salary and Career Information

With a master’s degree in electrical or computer engineering, you’ll be ready for a high-quality career in one of the top job markets. Engineering offers lucrative salaries while also providing a stable job market.

Occupation
Expected Growth
(BLS, 2022-2032)
Median Salary
(BLS, May 2022)

Electrical Engineer4%$103,320
All Engineers7%$100,030

As you can see, many engineers are at the top of the earnings spectrum. And remember: the base education for most of these careers is a bachelor’s degree. With a master’s you are more likely to earn salaries above the median.

The salaries are high, but the field is also expected to have steady and even rapid job growth. All the engineering categories show strong growth, with some more than doubling the overall rate for job growth. Electrical engineers, for example, are expected to grow by 7% while the total job market will grow by 3%.

Engineers can work in almost any location, but computer and electrical engineering is often concentrated in certain cities and states. The highest concentration of electrical engineers is in New Hampshire, where there are 3.03 electrical engineers for every 1,000 jobs. Michigan is second with 2.31 per 1,000 jobs. While cost of living must be a consideration, California has the highest annual mean wage for these professionals. In California, engineers earn a mean wage of $150,940.
