Methodology for Rankings of the Cheapest Online Criminal Justice Associate’s Degree Programs
These rankings of online criminal justice associate programs are based on our spring 2024 review of degrees. In order to calculate the total cost, we use a variety of factors including minimum required credit hours, tuition rates, and general fees. At the time of collection, the information was valid and specific to the individual program. Profiles for the same degrees found in the directory on our site may, on occasion, reflect a different cost based on editorial update schedules.
The published cost is an estimated total price for the entire degree, but actual costs will vary by student. For example, if you have transfer credits, your cost may be lower. Prerequisite courses, textbook fees, licensing requirements, financial aid, and numerous other factors can impact the price of an online criminal justice degree.
We strive to create the most honest, accurate ranking system possible. Therefore, we do not accept payments from schools to be included or removed from our rankings. The rankings are open to any regionally-accredited public or nonprofit college or university that offers an online criminal justice degree. We do not include degrees from non-accredited, nationally-accredited, or for-profit schools in our rankings. We also exclude from our rankings degrees that are available less than 80% online and those that are only available to students in five states or fewer.
Program Note: In order to qualify for a ranking, the online criminal justice program must be regionally accredited. Additional programmatic accreditation is noted in the rank table. Degrees labeled with superscript 14 indicate that options for this program have changed since publication.
Why Choose an Online Criminal Justice Associate Degree?
Think an online criminal justice associate’s degree program is right for you? Here are some of the top reasons people enroll in these interesting, engaging programs:
Start college at an affordable price: Attending an associate program can save, on average, about $10,300 over the first two years of your college education. (See “Program Cost” below.) This starts your criminal justice training with a lower cost than starting off in a bachelor’s program.
Join a rewarding law enforcement profession: Law enforcement and criminal justice are vital to the safety and security of all people. These degrees create a pathway to this essential yet challenging profession in the criminal justice system.
Try criminal justice with less commitment: With one of these affordable two-year programs, you can try criminal justice as an academic field without the major financial and time commitment of a four-year program. If, after two years, you feel it’s right, you can move into a bachelor’s degree.
Cost for an Online Criminal Justice Degree
One of the main reasons to enroll in an associate’s degree, regardless of subject, is the affordable price. Most of these degrees come from community colleges, which usually have a lower cost than four-year degrees. There is plenty of overlap, and some community colleges can be expensive, but in general the tuition and fees are less.
The average price in this database is $17,500. Assuming two years of full-time study, this translates to roughly $8,750 per year. However, the average price for a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration, a four-year commitment, is $55,600. This equals $13,900 per year.
Using these averages, we can reasonably assume that a student can typically save about $5,150 annually for the first two years. That’s $10,300 in savings to start your education.
The most affordable criminal justice associate’s degree online comes from Cerro Coso Community College in California. The school’s Associate in Science in Administration of Justice has an estimated in-state cost of only $2,768. California residents in this program pay about $1,384 annually for full-time attendance.
For any students outside of California the most affordable program is the Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University. This program costs $5,900, a price that is available to in- and out-of-state students. Albany State University’s Associate of Science in Criminal Justice is another noteworthy program. This degree costs just $6,245 for all students.
The most expensive degree comes from Hawaii Pacific University. The school’s Associate of Science in Criminal Justice costs $65,760, which translates to just under $33,000 per year.
Three Cheapest Online Criminal Justice Associate Degrees
Pricing is one of the main reasons to attend an associate’s degree with a transfer pathway. With this database, you’ll find useful information about online criminal justice associate’s degree programs that offer a curriculum designed to transfer into a bachelor’s level program, with lower up-front costs.
With so many degrees in this database, there are numerous low-cost options. But, these programs represent the cheapest online criminal justice associate’s degree programs you can find:
#1. Cerro Coso Community College
Degree: Associate in Science in Administration of Justice
Cost: $2,768 (In-state, California)
Accreditation: Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges
Students in California can enjoy low tuition when they enroll in a criminal justice program at one of the state’s numerous community colleges. This AS in Administration of Justice is an excellent example: with an estimated cost of $2,768, it’s the cheapest online criminal justice associate’s degree in this database. The out-of-state cost, however, is significantly higher, at $23,288.
This criminal justice degree program is made for students who want to transfer to a four-year school. Graduates can enter many universities with junior standing, where they can study a variety of academic disciplines. In addition to criminal justice, students are prepared for university programs in political science, sociology, public administration, and law enforcement. This program is also useful for people considering law school.
Cerro Coso Community College has created a world-class learning experience with an affordable price. CC Online allows students to complete two-year programs such as the criminal justice degree online with flexible coursework and virtual learning.
#2. West Los Angeles College
Degree: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science in Administration of Justice
Cost: $2,796 (In-state, California)
Accreditation: Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges
This is another cheap online criminal justice associate degree. In fact, it’s only $28 more than the most affordable option. ($14 per year will hardly drive your enrollment decision!) The out-of-state price must be considered if you are not a California resident; it’s more than eight times higher at $23,316.
The Administration of Justice program is available with either an associate of arts or an associate of science track. They share similarities, but criminal justice courses in the AS program focuses more on the principles and practices of the criminal justice system, while the AA degree is designed for vocational training and workforce development within the law enforcement system.
West Los Angeles College offers hybrid and online learning options to students from all across the country. Students can learn about the criminal justice field through a 100% online program while developing a real connection to the school.
#3. San Bernardino Valley College
Degree: Associate of Arts in Administration of Justice
Cost: $2,922 (In-state, California)
Accreditation: Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges
With a price of $2,922 for California residents, this is another affordable option that delivers an excellent start to your education in the criminal justice field. The cost for out-of-state students in this program is $25,002, so there is, again, a sizable jump from in-state to out-of-state tuition.
In this online criminal justice degree, you will learn to apply knowledge and skills within the court, law enforcement, and corrections systems. Graduates will understand the specifics of the criminal justice system, such as the ability to determine the admissibility of evidence in a court case.
San Bernardino Valley College offers some of the best online learning in the country. Services include online tutoring, which helps students navigate complex topics or difficult subjects. Tutors can help students understand assignments, review papers, and answer questions, creating a more successful learning experience.
Special Note: Georgia State University (Cheapest out-of-state tuition)
Degree: Associate of Science in Criminal Justice
Cost: $5,900 (All students)
Accreditation: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
All the colleges we have mentioned so far offer low prices (under $3,000 for two years of study) to California residents, while out-of-state learners pay over $23,000.
For those outside of California, there are still plenty of options of online programs, including the Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University, which has an estimated cost of $5,900 for all students. This is the most affordable criminal justice associates degree online for students regardless of location.
Degree Transfer Programs: Understanding the Various Types
These degrees come in two types: associate of science and associate of arts. Each has its own unique benefits and drawbacks, but an associate of arts (AA) tends to focus more on liberal arts coursework, such as philosophy, history, and literature. An associate of science (AS), meanwhile, generally focuses on math and science subjects.
There is little difference in pricing between one type and the other. The most affordable online criminal justice degree is an AS degree, but the second cheapest is an AA program. Fourth on the list is an AA; fifth is an AS. In other words, one type of criminal justice program is not inherently cheaper than the other.
All of these online criminal justice degrees are transfer-ready programs. They are designed to prepare students for transfer into a four-year degree, creating a flow from a community college or two-year school into a major university or college. While credits from other types of programs may transfer, these programs were created to provide a more seamless process, with fewer barriers, going from one school to another.
Accreditation for Criminal Justice Programs
Accreditation is an important part of the academic process. Essentially, accredited colleges have been reviewed and approved by authority groups known as accrediting bodies.
Attending an accredited school is always important, but it’s especially critical if you plan on transferring to a bachelor’s degree. Most schools will only accept transfer credits from accredited schools, so if you attend a non-accredited school, you may have to complete your initial two years all over again.
All the online criminal justice degree programs in this database have accreditation from regional organizations. In fact, this is a requirement to be included in the rankings on our website.
Typical Admission Requirements for Associate Degrees in Criminal Justice
If you plan on enrolling in an associate’s degree in criminal justice, then you’ll need to understand the enrollment process. Fortunately, the process for most of these degrees is fairly simple. Overall, most applicants with a decent academic background will find a program that accepts their application.
In order to enroll in an online criminal justice degree, you need to complete a high school degree or be near completion. The school will request transcripts, which must be sent directly from the high school. In addition to transcripts, you may need letters of recommendation or a statement of purpose, although these are less common for community colleges.
You may need placement testing as well. Community colleges often use placement testing to gauge your understanding of basic subjects like math, science, and English. These tests are used to determine class level, not necessarily admission. They won’t determine whether you get into the AA or AS criminal justice program but could determine what classes you start with.
Each college is different, so contact the school’s admissions office or review their online information for enrollment standards.

In order to become a police officer, law enforcement agencies require you to complete academy training. Similar to military boot camp, this training tests your physical abilities and law enforcement knowledge, helping you become an effective law enforcement official.
If you want to become a correctional officer, then you may need licensing. Each state has different requirements and some demand that officers complete state certification. These law enforcement specialists complete academy training as well.
Graduates of these online associate degree programs can also move into a bachelor’s degree and ultimately complete law school to become a lawyer in the criminal justice system. This occupation in criminal law requires advanced criminal justice education and training, as well as the successful completion of the bar exam.
