Affordable Master’s in Coaching and Athletic Administration Online: What to Expect
A master’s degree requires 30 to 36 credit hours of study, usually completed over two years and four semesters of school. The curriculum will include issues that are fundamental to coaching and sports, such as the basics of sports psychology, strength training, and team motivation. Essentially, it acts as a way for current coaches to improve the skills they already have; namely, the ability to help athletes thrive.
All of these programs center around athletic organization and coaching. However, there are big differences that vary depending on the school, the type, and the concentration. Firstly, there are “master of arts,” “master of science,” and “master of education” degrees in coaching and athletics.
A master of arts (MA) in coaching generally includes more theories and philosophies of coaching, while a master of science (MS) will focus on research and proven data. A master of education, on the other hand, is essentially a teaching degree with a concentration in coaching.

This coaching master’s degree online comes from WMU’s Department of Human Performance and Health Education. It takes an athlete-centered approach to the philosophy of sports and high-performance coaching.

Accreditation for Coaching Master’s Degrees
Accreditation is an important part of the academic process. Essentially, it acts as a form of quality control or review system that ensures programs and schools meet a high level of academic excellence.
Accreditation, for the most part, comes in two broad types, the first of which is institutional. Institutional accreditation covers the entire school, including all degrees offered by that college or university. This form of approval is granted by regional groups that cover large sections of the United States. Examples of regional accrediting groups include the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Typical Online Admission Requirements
A master’s degree is one of the highest levels of academic achievement, second only to a doctorate. Students must be well prepared for these challenging programs, so the schools set a high standard for admission.
The most basic requirement is a bachelor’s degree. Without this four-year degree, you can’t enter into a master’s program, regardless of the subject. However, merely graduating may not be enough, as some programs also have GPA requirements. You may need a 2.5 or 3.0 to gain admission into these programs.
Some programs require you to have experience in coaching before you can enroll. This requirement, if it exists, could be between one and five years of coaching experience.

Licensing and Certification for Coaches and Sports Leaders
Coaches don’t always need a license. However, many coaches at high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools are teachers, which means a teacher’s license is required. A teacher’s license is administered through the state, with requirements for education and a licensing exam.
Coaches may also need certification, but the process is different for every state. If you want to work as a college coach, you may need certification through the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
There are also certifications related to a specific sport. For example, if you are a basketball coach, you could become certified through the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Salary and Career Outlook for Coaches
Coaches have motivations far beyond money. Although famous college and professional coaches earn millions of dollars a year, the majority of coaches have salaries that are far more modest.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual income for coaches and scouts, as calculated in May 2021, was $38,970. This is less than the median for all occupations, which was over $45,000.
However, the BLS points out that many coaches work part-time, and many of the positions are seasonal, which complicates the data. The number is likely pulled lower by people who only coach part-time or seasonally. It’s likely not their main occupation. As we’ve noted, many coaches are also teachers, so the coaching income may come in addition to their regular pay.
Regardless of pay, it appears the career does have a strong outlook. The number of coaches and scouts is expected to rise by 20% between 2021 and 2031, quadrupling the expected rate for all occupations. By 2031, the BLS expects over 293,000 coaches and scouts across the country.
Why so much growth? Some gains will be recovery from COVID-induced declines, but there is also growing interest in college and recreational sports.
Predictably, the largest states have the most coaches. California, New York, Ohio, Florida, and Texas are all in the top five. However, Montana has the highest concentration of coaches, with 3.13 coaches and scouts per 1,000 jobs. Iowa is #2 with 3 per 1,000 jobs, followed by Kansas with 2.99.
