About Kirkwood Community College

Kirkwood Community College is a public, two-year liberal arts school located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Kirkwood was founded in 1966 by Governor Harold Hughes and named after Samuel Kirkwood, who was an early abolitionist as well as Iowa’s Governor during the Civil War.

Kirkwood Community College offers certificates of completion and associate’s degrees in over 140 programs. Kirkwood also offers an adult high school, adult basic education, and GED programs. These programs include continuing Education personal and professional development courses as well as accelerated delivery formats for working adults. The college offers many classes and a variety of Liberal Arts degrees online. Different formats of learning include: interactive instructional television system, online courses, distance learning live, hybrid courses, and college credit for high school students. FlexFORWARD is Kirkwood’s version of self-paced learning. It is a learning experience based on competency. FlexFORWARD students enjoy the same curricula, faculty, learning outcomes, tuition, and financial assistance as traditional classes. Many courses offer materials that are included at NO CHARGE. Students also gain the added benefit of six start dates each year.
