BBC Investigates Bogus Online University - UK |
For the last seven years a bogus Irish distance-learning college, Irish International University (IIU), has flourished in the UK. Like many degree mills, IIU, which has an impressive student body of 5,000 worldwide, has maintained an elaborate illusion of validity through ploys designed to project an aura of public authenticity. In this case, IIU maintained an illusion of respectability by renting out buildings on the campuses of Oxford and Cambridge to stage their own graduation ceremonies.
The "university," which operates out of a maildrop in Dublin, claims "approval" and "accreditation" by a fake agency: QAC-UK Ltd - the Quality Assurance Commission, in North London. The QAC website lists an impressive roll-call including the QAC Commissioner General and an Acting Commissioner General. Not surprisingly, the BBC has determined that the "independent" accrediting agency QAC is operated by the owner of the university itself, a "scholar" who holds an honorary doctorate degree from an unaccredited university in the Caribbean Islands.
Oxford University has issued a public statement saying they will not rent their facilities to the Irish International University in the future.

| Help Stop Online Degree Mills! |

The Diploma Mill Police™ is a free vital public service offered by the educational counselors at GetEducated.com. This free service, which chronicles consumer warnings on college diploma mills in the USA, protected more than 4,000 online learners from educational fraud last year.
Newsweek lauds the Diploma Mill Police as "the source for weeding out phonies among online degrees." In 2007, CNN's consumer finance reporter recommended online learning to a national audience seeking career credentials but warned consumers, "Beware diploma mills ... Go to GetEducated.com and ask the Diploma Mill Police."
GetEducated.com needs your help! We feel it should be a vital part of every educator's mission to help ensure that elearning continues to develop as a trusted avenue of educational access worldwide. 300+ online college degree mills now threaten this mission. If you operate a website, blog, or any other resource dedicated to quality online learning, please sign-on as a Diploma Mill Police Deputy site.
It's easy. It's free. And it's the only smart way to combat what the United Nations and the International Institute for Educational Planning now terms part of a worldwide epidemic in educational fraud and corruption.

| Healthcare Degrees Online: First National Survey |
|
GetEducated is pleased to announce that we will, for the first time, this spring, survey and profile accredited distance degrees, both grad and undergrad, in healthcare. The results will be published in April as a part of our free downloadable guidebook series for consumers: Best Distance Learning Graduate Schools and Best Distance Learning Undergraduate Schools.
The new healthcare guidebooks are being developed in response to relentless demand from clearinghouse visitors, who want to know more about this exploding career area.
The new guidebooks will be offered free, and are expected to profile more than 100 accredited degree options ranging from a Masters in Healthcare Law to a legion of Bachelors in Nursing aimed at RNs working across the United States.
Our researchers have already begun the survey process. If you represent a college degree program in any area of healthcare please let our editors know by sending us a note along with your program URL. Free basic listings are available for every accredited option (USA).
Contact Melissa Eubank, Director of Information Services (Melissa at geteducated.com) by March 15th to find out how to enter your college in the survey process. The survey will form the basis of our first Best Buy rankings for online degrees in healthcare, to be released in July 2008. |
| How Do You Choose an Online MBA? |
Once a rarity, online grad degrees are now mainstream. In 1989, when GetEducated began tracking distance degrees, only 3 accredited colleges offered MBAs (Master's of Business Administration). Today, more than 130 colleges offer the degree, which has become the most popular online graduate school option.
But all distance MBAs are not equal. GetEducated's last national survey of 130 eMBA programs revealed online learners should be prepared to pay as little as $5,598 or as much as $115,700 for a regionally-accredited MBA. With so many options now available, at such a wide price point, anyone considering an e-degree would do well to take the time to learn how to shop for an online university. Price, the most visible variable, is accompanied by differences in accreditation status, admission requirements, and the demographics of incoming students.
How do you choose an online MBA? What offers the Best Buys? How do you spot a diploma mill? What do employer's look for in an online B-School? Learn the answers to these vital questions in GetEducated's free resource article in the current edition of ELearn Magazine.

Free Listings - Online Grad Degrees in Engineering |
|
The research team at GetEducated.com is preparing the 2008-09 edition of our popular free PDF guidebook, Best Distance Learning Graduate Schools: Engineering.
This FREE downloadable (PDF) college guidebook profiles the best accredited engineering graduate schools operating in the USA today, including 56+ online degree programs from name brand options such as Stanford University.
"This national survey is the only one of its kind," reveals Vicky Phillips, Chief Education Analyst. "Most online education directories list an average of 5 distance master's in engineering. At GetEducated, our researchers compile and compare data on every accredited distance degree operating in the United States; this means students can learn about 50 grad degree options rather than 5."
The research team's survey findings will be released June 2008. These findings will include new rankings of the Top 25 Best Buys in Online Master's in Engineering. The last Get Educated survey, provided vital comparative data on the cost of online masters in engineering and allied career areas.
"How much should a student pay for an online master's in engineering?" asks Phillips. "Our last survey of 56 distance learning master's revealed online learners should be prepared to pay as little as $5,280 or as much as $67,500."
Get Educated's earlier surveys exploded the myth that competitive grad schools don't offer distance degrees. Universities represented in the 2006 survey included established educational brands such as Penn State, University of Massachusetts, University of Illinois Online, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Purdue University.
"Our mission," says Phillips, "is to serve a new generation of higher education students by showcasing all available distance options equally. When potential students use GetEducated's free guidebooks they learn about scores of great public and elite private universities that aren't listed anywhere else online because both low-cost, public universities and elite established private universities literally don't engage in national online ad campaigns."
As a part of a national consumer mission to help people get educated about quality online learning, GetEducated continues to offer free basic guidebook program listings to all eligible accredited institutions.
To be eligible for a free profile in the 2008-09 guidebook edition a university must meet the following criteria: Offer a graduate degree or career certificate in an editorially relevant major area - engineering or an allied specialty areas; be headquartered in the USA; and be accredited by an agency recognized by CHEA to grant degrees in the USA.
If your university operates a distance engineering program make sure it's included in GetEducated's 2008-09 survey.
There is no cost associated with the survey, or to receive a free basic guidebook listing. E-Mail Melissa Eubank, Director of Information Services, (Melissa at geteducated.com), for profile submission details and deadlines.
Universities that participate will receive a free profile in the 2008 guidebook and automatically be included in the research team's expanded ongoing ranking efforts.
